AIP Breakfast Smoothie Recipe
I recall that this very restrictive diet made me feel good at the time (as did the HCG diet due it’s restrictive nature), and I even lost some weight without really trying! So I kinda knew that there was at least one food that had been excluded at that time that was causing problems for me.
But at the time I was traveling around Australia in a campervan, having fun and feeling free, so I didn’t put too much commitment into the diet and therefore I never really found out what foods I needed to avoid (the whole point of the diet really…).
So here I am, a few years later, giving it another go, and here’s why….
Why I’m Back On The Autoimmune Protocol
Since I started taking supplements for Pyroluria almost 3 years ago, my health has generally been much better and my body is (mostly) a better place to live.
However there’s still stuff going on that I’ve been basically ignoring and hoping would just eventually go away, because to be honest, I’m sick of trying to work it all out.
I’m sick of thinking about food, what I can eat and what I can’t eat, and I’m sick of mulling over what I shouldn’t eat!
But a conversation with my friend and naturopath recently made me sit up and take a bit more notice of that ‘stuff’ that I’ve been ignoring.
You see the conversation got on to hayfever. She suffers from it and I don’t. But, I told her, I do have a lot of trouble with my nose streaming, getting stuffed up and sneezing for no apparent reason. It just comes on and it happens regularly, sometimes daily, but it isn’t set off by anything in particular apart from dust occasionally.
‘That’s a sign of autoimmune disease’ she said.
Really??? Well crap. I didn’t know that….
I thought I had the whole autoimmune side of things pretty much sorted, but maybe not.
Maybe the nose thing, and some of the ‘niggly’ stuff that’s still going on with me is my body letting me know that I don’t have it anywhere near sorted.
Now I’m going to be honest right here and say that I KNOW I’ve still got gut issues and staying off dairy helps (I only eat a bit of cheese… oh, and maybe some ice cream occasionally...). But the thing is that I don’t have constant diarrhea anymore, and that just makes it all so much easier to live with – and ignore!
But just like those TV ads, there’s more!
I also have that stuff that goes on with my joints, and my tendons, and blah, blah, blah…
So here I am, oh joy of joys, back on the autoimmune paleo diet.
And after refreshing my memory about what foods I need to avoid (which is almost everything…) my biggest question when I started was ‘what can I have for breakfast?’
After a bit of pondering, my answer was, this smoothie!
My Autoimmune Paleo Diet Breakfast Smoothie Recipe
- 1/2 to 3/4 cup of Berries – I use blueberries, raspberries and boysonberries.
- Coconut milk or cream – about half to three quarters of a cup
- 1 or 2 tablespoons of hydrolyzed collagen
- 1/2 large avocado
- Filtered water
I also add a large teaspoon of Calm magnesium powder, my liquid herbs that I’m currently taking and a good shot of home made Kombucha!
Whizz it all up in a blender. (I’ve recently bought one of these bullet type blenders and it’s amazing!)
This delicious AIP friendly smoothie keeps me going well past lunch time if I need it to which is great considering my work is quite physical. So give it a go. I reckon you’ll like it….
P.S. If you’ve been thinking about buying a blender, but you want something bigger and more powerful than the bullet blenders, I took a look at the Vitamix 4500 blender a while back and was very impressed!
