A Recipe For Depression: Turmeric Latte
I came across a recipe for Turmeric Latte the other day. Now this was a bit of a revelation for me because I’ve been trying to think of a way to get turmeric into my diet every day without taking more pills.
What an awesome idea!
I’ve been reading up on the health benefits of Turmeric for ages. Do you know there’s a whole world of research out there pointing to the health benefits of this bright yellow spice?
Well after all my reading I knew that turmeric had anti-cancer benefits and that it’s anti-inflammatory, but I’ve only recently cottoned on to the fact that it’s apparently also beneficial for depression.
I know about depression…
Unfortunately depression is just one of the common symptoms of Pyrrole Disorder (aka Pyroluria), and although I’ve struggled with it to some extent most of my life, between additional stresses over recent years, menopause and the copper dumping that began after starting on supplements for Pyroluria two years ago, that black cloud that steals all joy from me has become a regular visitor.
Depression sucks…. 😥
So, if adding a daily dose of turmeric will help my body to not only fight inflammation, but potentially help with depression as well, then I’m even more keen to get stuck in and give it a go.
But then comes the next question…
How to take Turmeric?
I love a good curry, but you can only eat so many curries can’t you?
In the past I’ve tried adding it to a gluten free porridge in the morning with some black pepper and coconut oil (because you need to add black pepper and oil to make the curcumin more bio-available) – but it just didn’t taste so good and it didn’t take long to get over eating bitter, yellow porridge every day…
In the past I’ve also added it to smoothies, but that wasn’t particularly appetizing either.
I don’t really want to take turmeric capsules. Although popping a pill sounds easy, I don’t want to take any more. (But if you do, make sure you get one that contains black pepper like this one)
But Turmeric Latte… Now that sounds great to me!
So I tried it and it is great!
There’s no bitter turmeric taste.
No black pepper taste.
There’s just this spicy, sweet yumminess.
What a great idea!
And what makes this recipe better than most others that I’ve found online, is that the paste made up ready to go in the fridge, which means it’s as quick and easy to make as instant coffee – kind of like ‘instant turmeric latte…’
The original recipe came from Kelly Brogan’s website, but I’ve changed it slightly by adding some ground ginger and mixed spice. Here it is…
Turmeric Latte Recipe
Ingredients – Turmeric paste
- 1/2 cup organic ground turmeric
- 2 tablespoons ground ginger
- 2 tablespoons mixed spice
- 1 to 2 cups of filtered water
- 1/3 cup organic virgin coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
The how to – Turmeric paste
Add the turmeric, ground ginger, mixed spice and one cup of water to a pan. Simmer on a low heat (you will need to stir regularly) for about 10 minutes adding more water if the mixture dries out too much (you want a thick paste consistency).
Once cooked add the coconut oil and black pepper and mix well.
Cool and store in a jar in the fridge.
