Chocolate: The Tastiest Superfood!
Chocolate is good for you! (Little happy dance happening… I know…. 🙂 ). We’ve all heard that good bit of news.
But not just any old chocolate will do! Delicious, dark, organic and preferably raw chocolate is the way to go if you’re wanting to take full advantage of the health benefits that chocolate can provide. (Check out my raw chocolate mousse recipe here – it’s seriously good!)
Now the truth is that companies that make the stuff that’s filled with artifical junk will do their best to make us believe that their products are a healthy choice. But that’s called marketing and it’s what successful companies do to increase profits.
However, buy the right sort of chocolate and you’ve got yourself a very good deal and a food that your body can use to make you both happier and healthier.
Chocolate Can Be VERY Good For You
Organic dark chocolate is probably the minimum choice you’d want to make if you’re looking for a truly healthy product made from Cacao.
But while your ordinary organic dark chocolate is a better choice than your mainstream milk chocolate and artificially flavoured varieties, it is still heated and processed which no doubt removes some of the health giving properties that the raw cacao contained before all the processing.
Raw Chocolate Rocks!
If you want to feed your body the REAL super-dooper, superfood variety of health giving chocolate, go for the RAW variety.
Cacao beans are an true superfood, and raw chocolate made from them is amazing. It’s not only delicious but extremely good for you.
Include raw cacao in your diet in some form and your body will thank you for it!
Chocolate makes you happy…
Cacao beans contain many substances that have earned them the reputation as being nature’s anti-depressant.
To start with cacao beans contain neurotransmitters that are associated with promoting a healthy mood and positive mental state.
The phenylethylamine or PEA contained in cacao beans affects brain chemistry in a very interesting and positive way. To say you “love” chocolate may not be too far off since PEA produces a brain chemistry that’s similar to that associated with falling in love!
In addition to containing mood enhancing neurotransmitters, cacao beans also contain the amino acid tryptophan and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors.
MAO inhibitors allow the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine to circulate in the bloodstream longer, which may help alleviate depression and support feelings of well being.
MAO inhibitors have long been featured in antidepressant pharmaceutical medications, as has tryptophan. Tryptophan plays a vital role in the production of serotonin within the body which helps you to feel great!
Cacao is a great source of magnesium
Cacao is also remarkably rich in sulfur and magnesium. In fact it is one of the best sources of magnesium.
Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones, and is associated (again) with more happiness.
Magnesium is the most deficient major mineral on the Standard American Diet (SAD); over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in Magnesium.
Chocolate can help keep you beautiful
Cacao is high in the beauty mineral sulfur. Sulfur builds strong nails, hair, beautiful, shiny skin, detoxifies the liver, and supports healthy pancreas functioning.
Anecdotal reports indicate that cacao also detoxifies mercury because it is so high sulfur.
Cacao contains subtle amounts of caffeine and theobromine. However, experiments have shown that these stimulants are far different when consumed raw than cooked.
So, the moral to this story? Consume chocolate regularly and preferably consume your chocolate dark, organic and raw! No guilt required. 😀
P.S. Have you tried these amazing Cacao Melts? They’re pure, raw, organic chocolate. Use them in recipes anywhere that you’d use cacao or chocolate, or simply add your sweetener of choice and flavourings (think chopped nuts, dried fruit, or even peppermint or orange essential oils) to make your own super healthy chocolate at home. Yum!
