Juice Fasting Or Juice Feasting? What Is The Difference?
What IS The Difference Between Juice Fasting & Juice Feasting?
This question went through my mind when I first came across info on Juice Feasting. I’ve done a few very short (24 hours usually) juice fasts over the last dozen or so years and when I came across the term juice feasting, I thought that it was the same thing – but it’s not!
So what’s the difference?
Traditional juice fasting has always been an attempt to fast with the aid of juice – the less juice the better. It was only there to make the whole fasting process a little easier really.
Juice feasting on the other hand is a feast of freshly made, raw juices consumed in fairly large quantities for as long as you want to do it – up to 92 days which is the time frame aimed for to achieve best results according to David Rainoshek of Juicefeast.com. The three month time period seems to be an ideal target because a large number of the cells in our body are replaced withing a 3 month time frame. This means that if you’re detoxing and giving your body great nutrition for 3 months then at the end of it, you’ll really be a new you!
Juices are made from (ideally) a wide selection of fresh and (if possible) organic produce. 10-15lbs of produce per day per person, with a focus preferably on lots of green juices, and less or no fruit depending on the person and whether they have problems with sugars or not. For example diabetics or pre-diabetics would be better off with little or no sugars.
What this does is give the juice feaster a huge amount of nutrients in a form that doesn’t tax the body and allows for detoxification. I think it’s a great plan!
The feaster can also take supplements. A number of supplements and superfoods are often recommended such as bee pollen for its protein, enzymes and myriad of other health giving properties. MSM is also advised along with a green mixed powdered supplement (like this Divine Green Superfood mix), virgin coconut oil, bentonite clay and others to add extra nutrition as well as minimise any unwanted detox symptoms.
Juice feasting can reverse disease, premature aging and literally create a new person out of you. I’m at the end of day 4 of a juice feast and I might do another day or two this time. I think I’ll be embarking on a longer one some time in the not too distant future. Ideally I’d like to do 3 months, but I think I’ll do a few more shorter ones before I embark on the big one. I think it’ll help me to get back on track with eating more raw and make a big difference to my health and my thyroid!
I know what a difference a detoxified body can make. I had a taste of the effects 12 years ago after going on fruit only diet for about 3 months. At that point the fruit diet turned my health around and it stayed that way for a number of years until I made a severe error in judgement and took up smoking again for four years (I know – bizarre! It wasn’t a conscious decision). This was one of the bigger mistakes of my life because even though I quit smoking again 6 years ago, I’ve never yet managed to really recover my health – not anywhere near like what it was – and I want it back – the way it was 12 years ago. During those years of my life, my health was awesome, my weight wasn’t an issue and I felt like I was invincible. I know that some people will say that it’s easier to be like that when in your 30’s, but I believe that it doesn’t make any difference what age you are – it all depends on the condition of your body.
I was healthier, slimmer, fitter, more confident and more full of life in my mid thirties than I was as a teenager, or in my twenties or my early thirties. In my twenties I was headed rapidly to an early grave. I was morbidly obese and unwell. I know what a difference detoxing my body can make and I know that this is what I need to get back there – it’s just doing it that’s the trick.
Easier said than done – especially with a sick thyroid that affects your emotions and the way you think! But like all goals, the secret is to keep the end in mind and that’s what I’ll be doing just as I have these last 4 days. If I can do it for 4 days this time, I can do 10 or 20 or 50 or 92! If I borrow from the future and keep the results in mind I can do this. I just need to be prepared.
If you have health issues or just want to give your body a break and a chance to take care of itself, then juice feasting is a great way to do that. I doubt that anything else would come close to creating the results that can be achieved with a juice feast.
Have you ever tried juice feasting? If so leave a comment and let me know how you went!
Update: Shortly after writing this post I did a 74 day juice feast and it was AMAZING!!! When I write about it, I’ll add a link here. 🙂
