Today’s Raw Smoothie – Beetroot, Orange and Apple
I started this post at lunchtime today, and then went and sat in the sun for a couple of hours, got my books done for tax time and now it’s 8.30pm and I’m just getting back to it!
I just wanted to quickly share my smoothie that I had for lunch today. I have one almost every day – occasionally two! Today’s green smoothie was actually a dark purple/red colour – but it’s still a green smoothie because it contains plenty of leafy greens.
So, what did I have in it? It’s a bit hard to remember this many hours on but I’m delving into the memory bank and here goes:
- One small beetroot with it’s leaves – I just gave it a wash and cut of the straggly root.
- Juice from one orange
- One small green apple
- One average sized banana
- About 3 or 4 big handfuls of spinach leaves
- A bit of red cabbage – probably about 1/2 cup (it was what was left in the fridge so no specific reason for the measurement)
- About 2 tspns of Dulce flakes (that’s seaweed in case you’ve not come across it before)
- and some water – probably about 1.5 cups
Pop all the ingredients in to a high speed blender. Blend until smooth and creamy and voila! – one bright red, green smoothie.
You’ll know it’s good stuff from the colour! Beetroot is a really power packed veggie. If you can get it with the leaves on, use the leaves! Don’t throw them away.
Beetroot is really versatile and good for you. It has been shown in studies to lower blood pressure and it’s great for you. The humble beetroot is credited with supporting detoxification, lowering cholesterol, inhibiting the growth of cancers cells, and supports the liver. The leaves are really high in iron and great for anemia and it’s really high in antioxidants.
Something that I found interesting was that I left the glass and the blender jug sitting in my office when I went to sit in the sun, and when I returned, the remnants that were stuck to the side of the glass and the blender had changed colour. It was green!
What’s the science behind that little phenomenon I wonder? Interesting…. 🙂
